Rainy Day Vibes

Setting The Mood

Are you someone who loves a good rainy day forecast or do you cringe a little at the thought of an all-day downpour? For those of you who absolutely love rainy days like I do–this post is for you. ☔

I love everything about a rainy day: the way daylight shifts to soft gray, the gentle rumbles of thunder, the trees swaying in the wind, those tiny first drops of rain collecting on the window, and that soothing pitter-patter of the rain hitting the rooftop and falling down onto the pavement.

This outdoor soundscape from Mother Nature brings an instant sense of calm and relaxation that automatically ushers in warm cozy vibes and chill mode.

Here’s a quick behind-the-scenes clip of me brewing tea and finishing up this very blog post. I needed a calm, cozy reset as I gathered my final thoughts–and this moment gave me just that.

Rainy days have a way of slowing us down–our minds, our bodies, and even the way we go about our day when it’s storming out. Sometimes, this is exactly what we need.  When we allow ourselves to pause, be in the moment, prioritize our peace, and just be, the soothing sound of raindrops falling becomes more than just background noise, but a chance for us to reset, refocus, and recenter ourselves and our environment.

On rainy days, I’m known for setting a cozy mood in my home–making a pot of coffee or steeping some hot tea, changing into comfy clothes and slipping into one of my favorite silk robes– lighting candles in every room, turning on some jazz music, and just being present in the moment–enjoying the coziness of it all.

This kind of atmosphere brings so much peace, calm, and relaxation to both my mental and physical space.

It creates the perfect environment for organizing your surroundings, resetting your mind and energy, and recentering your life.

In this post, I’m sharing 25 simple tasks to help you do just that–whether you’re organizing your space, resetting your mind and energy by clearing away mental clutter, or recentering your life to focus on what matters most.

And what better time to manage these small but meaningful actions than on a slow, rain-filled day?

To make these tasks more manageable, I’ve grouped them into the three key areas I mentioned earlier: organizing your space, resetting your mind and energy, and recentering your life.

Organize Your Space-Organize Your Mind

Physical and Mental Reset Tasks

I don’t know about you but when my physical space is messy and things are scattered, my mind starts to feel the same exact way.  It becomes hard to focus, think clearly, or put ideas together properly. All I can think about is how much I need to organize and declutter so my thoughts can flow freely again. And surprisingly, as I start putting things back in order–even before I’m finished–a sense of calm and relaxation begins to settle in and center me.

Your physical space can become cluttered and disorganized quickly—especially after long days of working and tidying up is the last thing on your mind to deal with.

You tell yourself that you’ll get to it tomorrow…but then tomorrow brings more of the same exhaustion. And before you know it, cleaning becomes something you’ll get to eventually.

If this sounds like you, take a breath, no worries—you’re not alone, we’ve all been there.  A calm and cozy rainy day reset might be just what you need to clear the clutter and refresh your environment.

Here’s a list to help keep your space and mind organized as you begin your rainy day reset.

1. Light A Candle, Burn An Incense, Or Diffuse Essential Oils

Allow a peaceful, tranquil scent to shift the energy and mood of your space–Let it motivate you to transform the atmosphere by aligning the space with the scent of the candle.

I just ordered an aromatherapy diffuser from Amazon to add to my rainy day reset routine–but it won’t be just for rainy days. I also plan to use it during my evening wind-downs to help me transition from a full workday into a more relaxing nighttime routine. Shop this diffuser here: https://amzn.to/3RNW5H4

2. Organize Or Declutter Your Entryway

The entryway of your home is usually the first part of your house you see when you come in from work and the last space you’re in before leaving for the day.

Taking just 5-10 minutes to tidy up this area can shift the entire mood of your home.

Give your entryway table a good wipe down, reorganize items back how they were, and if possible, shop your home for accents to bring in a cozier vibe—a set of stacked hardback books, a flower-filled vase, and an aromatic candle to add warmth to the space can work wonders.

3. Turn On Soft Music While You Organize

Music is an automatic mood booster. It has a way of shifting your mood, mindset, and energy. Whether your style is jazz, lo-fi, neo-soul, r&b, country, or blues, let your favorite songs motivate you as you organize and reset your space. Be sure to check out my rainy day playlist later in the blog post!

4. Clean Off One Surface That Has Been Collecting Clutter

Surfaces are often the first places in your home that collect clutter–whether it’s the entryway table as you walk in, the kitchen counter as you pass through, or the bathroom vanity that you tend to leave in a messy state every single morning.

Pick a surface and give it a quick reset.  Set a timer for a 10-15 minute reset round, and organize this space. Clean until the timer goes off and then stop working–that’s it.

Keep in mind that this is a rainy day reset project–there’s no need to turn it into an all-day task.  You’ll be surprised at what you can get done within this timeframe and also how much lighter your mind and space will feel after just a few focused minutes.

5. Organize Your Kitchen Pantry

If you’ve been looking for a simple way to save money and reset your eating habits, start with your pantry.  Organizing this space not only makes your kitchen look tidy, it gives you a clear view of what you have, what you’re out of, and what you may need to purchase for a meal idea.

This simple task may be just the motivation you need to start cooking more at home instead of ordering takeout–which will lead to healthier eating habits and smarter spending.

6. Clean Out Your Closet

Your closet might be one of those areas in your home that could probably use a good sprucing up, especially if you’re in that season of life where you want to make sure you look the part by showing up as your most confident and put together self on most days.

Start by grouping similar items of clothing together: shirts, tees, and blouses in one section; jeans, pants, and trousers in another.

That way, no matter the occasion, you can quickly see what you have, and then depending on your mood, you can easily come up with a great OOTD, (Outfit-of-the-day). Having a well-organized closet makes getting dressed a lot less overwhelming and a lot more intentional.

7. Tidy Up Your Bathroom

Give your bathroom a simple refresh–clean off the mirror, disinfect the doorknob and surfaces, organize the vanity, replenish toiletries, sweep and mop the floors, spray a nice smelling air freshener, and then light your favorite scented candle for that cozy, calming ambiance.

Walking into a clean and tidy bathroom brings instant, peaceful vibes. A well-organized bathroom space can inspire you to create a more intentional self-care morning and evening routine that’ll have you feeling ready to take on the day as well as settle in for the evening.

8. Refresh Your Laundry Area

Simplify your laundry area by sorting and organizing items into piles. Towels should be in one pile and clothing in another—according to type: pants, jeans, blouses.  After you’ve sorted everything, wash all the piles separately.

To keep this space neat, clean, and tidy, start a weekly laundry routine—choose one to two days a week for tending to your dirty clothes and sticking to it.

This way, you won’t have a pile of clothes to attend to and you won’t stress out when it’s time to tackle your laundry duties.

9. Declutter One Drawer You’ve Been Avoiding

We all have that one drawer– “the junk drawer” that’s usually filled with old receipts, random recipes, old batteries, and sometimes even spare change from our pockets.

What better time than a slow rainy day to finally declutter this space? Toss out what needs to go and find a better place for what needs to be kept.

Resetting  even a small space like this can quickly shift your mind into a calmer, less stressful state—making room for more mental clarity and awareness.

10. Relax In Your Favorite Cozy Spot

Create your own rainy day oasis. Find a quiet, cozy corner to curl up in, lounge in your favorite chair by the window, or relax on the sofa with a warm, comfy blanket as you unwind–listening to the soothing sounds of the rain hitting the rooftop.

Looking to create or upgrade your cozy rainy day setup? I found a beautiful, comfy-looking blanket on Amazon that’s perfect for helping you unwind and relax with ease.

Whether it’s a slow, rainy afternoon or one of those Netflix and Chill kinda nights, this blanket gives warm, relaxing, comfy, and cozy kind of vibes. Grab yours here: https://amzn.to/4k4yVYX

11. Journal Your Thoughts

Take a few moments to write down your thoughts and feelings.  What’s on your mind right now? How do you feel at this moment?

Journaling is a mindful practice that helps you slow down and check in with your inner self.

Interested in making journaling a regular part of your day? This beautiful Amazon journal features a soft leather hardcover, 256 pages, and comes in a variety of colors to suit your mood and style. This is the perfect companion for getting your thoughts on paper, organizing your ideas, and creating a daily moment of mindfulness. Check it out here: https://amzn.to/3YAN5bZ

12. Take A Cozy Nap

When you choose a cozy nap over cleaning and organizing, it doesn’t mean you’re being unproductive–it means you’re prioritizing your well-being.

Sometimes taking a nice, cozy nap is the best thing you can do to recharge your mind and boost your energy, especially if you need to reset from mental clutter.

So wrap yourself in a warm comfy blanket, kick your feet up, enjoy the coziness of your surroundings, and take a much needed break from the world.

13. Watch A Funny Movie

We’ve all heard that laughter is the best medicine, so why don’t we do more of it? Turn on your favorite funny movie and give yourself permission to let go.

Laugh out loud with no shame–watch how quickly your mood shifts. Forget about any cares or concerns from the day and laugh yourself into a happy, lighthearted mood.

14. Call A Good Friend Or Family Member

Life can get very busy real quick and trying to stay in contact  with friends and family can sometimes feel like a challenge.

Take a moment to connect with a good friend or family member you’ve been meaning to check in on.

Ask them how they’re doing. Listen without judgement.  Don’t rush the conversation. Share a laugh or two, and intentionally be in the moment of the conversation by practicing mindfulness.

15. Practice Mindfulness

So what does it mean to practice mindfulness? When you are fully present in the moment of what you are doing, feeling, or thinking– you are practicing mindfulness.

You’re not allowing your mind to drift back in the past or race ahead into the future–instead, you’re fully immersed in the here and now.

You can practice mindfulness in nearly anything you do–whether you’re sipping coffee or hot tea, eating a nourishing meal, or even while cleaning and organizing your space. When you regularly engage in this habit, it reduces stress, eases worry, and relieves anxiety–all the things that bring you into a more calm state of being.

16. Take 10-15 Minutes To Stretch Your Body

Stressful days can bring tension not just to your mind but to your body as well. Taking just 10-15 minutes to stretch can make a world of difference. Even something as simple as a shoulder or neck roll can relieve built up tension and reset your energy.

Try incorporating stretching into your daily routine–whether you do it as part of your morning wellness practice to help wake you up, or in the evening to help you wind down. Just a few minutes is all it takes—as you release physical tension, you’ll gain mental clarity in the process.

17. Read A Book

Curl up in your favorite cozy spot, grab a book you’ve been wanting to start (or finish), and just let your mind go. Some people read for knowledge while others read for entertainment–or to just simply relax and unwind.

Whatever your reason, let this be the time that you intentionally practice mindfulness by allowing yourself to slow down and be in the moment with every word you read.  Happy reading!

18. Dance Or Sing Along To Your Favorite Song

Some people I know get a little down on rainy days.  If you’re one of them, try dancing or singing along to your favorite song. Shift the energy and mood of the moment from gloomy to grounded–happy even.

Allow yourself to feel lighter by changing the atmosphere with the rhythm of the music.

19. Make A Soothing Rainy Day Playlist

Music is magical–it’s inspiring, comforting, and can instantly shift the mood. Rainy days often call for slow, sultry, and soothing melodies that create a warm, sometimes nostalgic, cozy vibe.

Let the rhythm set the tone. Creating a rainy day playlist for relaxing moments like this gives you something to look forward to when the weather keeps you indoors.

Put it on repeat, indulge in the moment, and let it reset your mind and mood.

Here’s a suggested rainy day playlist I created to soothe your soul, relax your mind, and elevate your rainy day experience.

20. Set 1–3 Small Goals For The Upcoming Week

Rainy days can often be a time for reflection–perhaps because they allow us to intentionally pause and slow down when we probably wouldn’t.

If you’re looking for a simple way to spend your rainy day, consider setting a few small goals for the week ahead.

These goals don’t have to be anything overwhelming–just small, achievable steps to keep you moving in the direction that matters most to you–whether that’s your health, peace of mind, or productivity .

Once you’ve completed a goal, take a moment to notice the satisfaction that comes when you get to cross it off your list.

21. Plan Your Meals For The Next Few Days

Rainy days are perfect for taking care of the little things, like meal planning. Don’t you just hate it when you think you’ve handled everything for the week, you’re feeling good about yourself, but then you remember you’ve forgotten to plan your meals or make a grocery list?

Take a few minutes to do a quick inventory of your kitchen and then make your list accordingly. This is a great time to get inspired and plan a couple of meals that can carry you through the week.

22. Prep An Easy, Healthy Meal Or Snack

Now that you’re done planning your meals for the next few days, this is the perfect time to actually put together something nourishing and satisfying.

Whether you’re in the mood for a tasty salad or a nice, healthy smoothie, I’ve got two easy recipes that will inspire you.  Both are versatile enough to enjoy for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

23. Set A Goal For The Week, Month, Or Year

Rainy days, in their own unique way, give us permission to slow down, practice mindfulness, and reflect on where we are in life – the goals we’ve set for ourselves whether for the week, the month, or even those new year’s resolutions we might have allowed to take a back seat until now.

When was the last time you checked in on the goals you set at the beginning of the week, month, or year?

Let today be the perfect opportunity to spend time revisiting, setting, or resetting those goals so they align with your vision of where you’re headed.

24. Write A Gratitude List

The vibe of a rainy day can often bring warm, calming thoughts to your mind and a sense of stillness to your space and energy.

Let the peaceful sound of the rain falling guide you to a moment of reflection and gratitude. Gratitude is the act of being thankful for what you have in the present moment.  When you take time to practice gratitude, you invite peace into your mind, joy into your heart, and comfort into your soul.

While you’re in this warm and cozy space, pause and reflect on your life. Make a simple gratitude list of what you’re grateful for.  It doesn’t have to be lengthy–just a few things that bring you the most peace, comfort, joy, and fulfillment.

This small act of thankfulness can transform your mind and mood,  creating a shift in perspective and a mindful reset.
